SLOWIANSKI SQUARE

Slowianski Square is located in Krakow at Slowanska Street, bordering on Krowoderska and Dluga Streets. It is the place where the church of the Holy Cross stood until 1817. It was founded by Władysław Jagiełło and Jadwiga Jagiello in 1390 for the Benedictines of the Slavic rite and thanks to this the church was also called "Slavic" . This name was also given to the square built after its demolition. Nowadays Slavic Square is a very neglected place. Destroyed pavements and bad condition of the greenery make this place unattractive. In the afternoon there are a lot of cars driving here which cause noise and air pollution. There are no benches where you can sit and rest. Greenery requires partial cutting and new planting. New species that will be planted will diversify the landscape and improve the aesthetics of the place.

The main assumption of the concept was to create a place with its own identity, a place characteristic and recognizable in Krakow, as well as a reference to the now non-existent Benedictine church.  Referring to the history of this place, the square was designed in the shape of the keyboard of the church organ. The concept of the organ keyboard used in the design of the Slavic Square is connected with organ music, which has been heard in the square for centuries. Walking from Dluga Street we will be able to observe an interesting arrangement of the surface and seats in the perturbation of the organ keys. The surface will be made of concrete, while the seats will be made of granite. A part of Slowianska Street will be redesigned on the square and the parking spaces belonging to it will be redesigned. In this way we will gain space and reduce noise and traffic. The whole will be complemented by newly planted greenery. There will be trees and attractive ornamental grasses. Birch trees will be planted from the side of the tenement houses and roads. Decorative grasses will be planted by benches and trees, as well as in the street, in a characteristic way. Thanks to this, the effect of "playing organs" will be captured.
